Pinelands Vs Somerset West (4-0 Win)
The regular troops gathered for another winter C league campaign with the new
status as the Pinelands Masters A team with Skipper Hannibal Ray in charge again
as well as a couple of old new recruits in Hollies and Skid. Fortunately the weather
was much cooler than the previous week as we geared up for the first game of the
new season against a Somerset West mixed team, sans our regular umpire Andre.

The 1st chukka got off to a rusty start with both teams giving away a lot of possession
as well as struggling to get some rhythm going, resulting in the first quarter ending
goalless. That all changed early in the 2nd chukka with a toned down (for the ladies)
version of Callum’s reverse stick which was superbly struck to find the top corner
and open the scoring. Our score was soon doubled by another Callum solo effort to
tap the bouncing ball over the advancing keeper into the back of the net for us to
finish 2-0 up at half time.
Our domination of possession was quickly rewarded in the 3rd chukka with Jarryd
managing to deflect Callum’s hattrick bound shot between his legs to claim our third
goal. Jarryd was again on hand to poach another goal bound strike from Hollies with
a final touch to put us 4-0 up at the ¾ mark.
The intention was to push for the “bonus point win” in the 4th chukka, but
unfortunately none of the half chances were converted. All this while Derek’s only
action of the game came by way of a kick out from one of the few opposition forays
into our D. Derek will be particularly pleased with the clean sheet given the
rumoured score line from the last game of summer league against a very different
Somerset West team!
And so the Pinelands (A=only) Masters Team got their summer league off to a
winning start, with plenty of good banter enjoyed over a few beers back at the
clubhouse afterwards.

Player of the Week
Youngster Callum for well taken chances to get the momentum going to get our
winter leagues off to a great start.
Wally of the Week
Awarded this week to Jarryd for pinching Cullum’s hattrick goal and then setting off
with an Imran Tahir like celebration….. Probably a bit harsh for other our double
goal scorer though .
KPIs
Match niggle-rating: 10/10 – no niggles at all between the ladies and gents, giving
both opposition umpires a relatively easy day too!
Our Basics: 7/10 – after the initial rustiness wore off there some very decent
hockey was played to create the goal scoring chances.
